Loper Lecture Series honoring Brian Lamb, Founder and Chairman of C-SPAN
Brian Lamb, founder and CEO of C-SPAN, the public affairs cable television network, delivers the annual Loper Lecture in Public Service Broadcasting. The Loper Lecture, named in honor of communication professor James L. Loper, was established in 2005 to bring industry leaders together to assess the state of public service broadcasting and chart a course for the future. RSVP required. Visit annenberg.usc.edu/loper. Ted TurnerCommunication Leadership CEO Series: Ted Turner

The Center on Communication Leadership, in partnership with USC Spectrum, presents a conversation with Ted Turner, the legendary creator of CNN, Turner Broadcasting and a host of other successful media ventures. Turner is also a pioneering philanthropist whose work supports the United Nations Foundation and several other non-profit organizations. Geoffrey Cowan, University Professor and director of the Center on Communication Leadership will lead the conversation with Turner, author of the forthcoming book, Call Me Ted. Tickets available through the USC Ticket Office.

Geoffrey Cowan participates in RAND's Politics Aside Weekend serving as a panel speaker for the discussion session entitled "U.S. Foreign Policy: A Return to Hearts and Minds?" moderated by Lindsey C. Kozberg, Vice President for External Affairs, RAND Corporation. Fellow panelists include Cheryl C. Benard, Director, RAND Initiative for Middle Eastern Youth; David C. Gompert Senior Fellow, RAND Corporation; Special Assistant to George H.W. Bush for National Security Affairs (1990-1993).

Dean's Open Forum on the Obama Election: Implications for Communication and Journalism Policies

Democratic DonkeyDean Ernest J. Wilson III and the Center on Communication Leadership present an open forum on the election of Barack Obama as president and implications on journalism and communication policies. Participants include a panel of faculy experts, including University Professor Geoffrey Cowan, director of the Center on Communication Leadership, USC College economics department chair and former FCC chief economist Simon Wilkie, and members of the Annenberg Research Network on International Communication, including communication and international relations professor Jonathan Aronson and clinical professor Jonathan Taplin, co-author of the Annenberg Policy Watch analysis of candidates' positions on media and technology issues. Issues to be covered include the future of the Federal Communications Commission, federal shield laws for journalists, media ownership, network neutrality, among others. Lunch will be served.

 Election Night @Annenberg
The Annenberg School for Communication is USC's election headquarters. >From 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., CalPIRG, Students for Barack Obama, and Students for John McCain will be phone banking and coordinating their election-day efforts from the Annenberg East Lobby. Come by to volunteer for your respective candidate, or as part of a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote effort. At 5:00 p.m., the USC Annenberg School for Communication, the Center on Communication Leadership and the USC Unruh Institute of Politics, invite students, faculty and friends to watch a telecast of election returns. The event will also focus on statewide offices and ballot propositions. Dan Schnur, director of the Unruh Institute, will be in attendance to provide an expert's opinion about the results. Refreshments will be served.

Visions and Voices presents "Black on Black"
Join Dean Ernest J. Wilson III for a screening of the the landmark 1968 documentary “Black on Black,” produced by journalism professor Joe Saltzman. The program will include a discussion led by University Professor Geoffrey Cowan on how conditions have changed for African-Americans in the 40 years since the premiere of this documentary, which was hailed for its pioneering effort to capture the voices and experiences of black America during one of the most volatile times in the nation's history. Along with Professor Saltzman, the discussion features political scientist Michael Preston, USC Vice Provost and author or editor of several books, including Racial and Ethnic Politics in California and The New Black Politics and journalism and communication professor Félix Gutiérrez, co-author of Racism, Sexism, and the Media: The Rise of Class Communication in Multicultural America. This event is part of Visions & Voices: The USC Arts & Humanities Initiative.
